Reusable Shopping Bag you have been waiting for

May 1st, 2009

Reusable shopping bags that are both practical and stylish are available from FootPrint Bag. Reusable shopping bags are designed to be reused on the supermarket shopping trip, hence they have to be durable and convenient to carry. Many of the resuable bags on the market tend to be too small, not convenient to carry or not built for years of weekly shopping.

FootPrint Bag took a fresh look at the reusable shopping bag market and decided to design their own reusable shopping bag solution from scratch. Catering for the different shopping capacities, FootPrint Bag produced a single Shopping Bag, a Shoulder Bag, a 4-Pack and 8-Pack bag version. This bag range comes in a variety of colours to suit indvidual tastes.

Footprint Bag - The Eco Bag Story

February 3rd, 2009

UK consumers use an estimated 10 billion plastic bags a year - that’s 167 per person according to DEFRA and every single plastic bag you have used in your lifetime hasn’t broken down yet. There are all still out there on the landfills - or even worse in our country sides!

A convenient alternative to the single use plastic bags was missing and this why we have designed the FootprintBag packs. For some people it might look as we are replacing one plastic bag with another. But you can’t oversimplify natural vs. synthetic fabrics for bags. We have researched potential materials very carefully before we opted for the ripstop polyester. We have experimented with natural products but we didn’t end up with an end product that would work. In order to justify our decision you have to look at other factors as well – like the design and lifecycle of our bags.

We wanted to design something that is neat and compact so it fits into a woman’s handbag or a car glove compartment. So there is no excuse to forget it on your shopping trips. In order to end up with a compact overall size our shopping bags had to fold up and fit into tiny interior pouches.

I agree with all the environmentalists out there, the best reusable bags are organic cotton carriers. But you have to be very committed to always bring numerous bulky cotton bags to your shopping trip and unfortunately not all people are. Due to the thickness of cotton, this material didn’t suit our design.

Our research showed that most people that want to do their bit for the environment are confronted with the following problem: If they remember to bring bags to the supermarket, they either end up with too many or not enough. In the later case they keep on adding to the collection of reusable bags lying at home. Our main concern is offering reusable bags that people will actually use. You will probably agree that a growing mountain of reusable bags that never leave your home isn’t good for the earth!

We strongly believe if people have a compact pack of multiple bags it is easier for them to reuse and therefore we can convert more people to do so. We have customer feedback saying that since they have a FootprintBag pack they have not once been short of reusable bags on my shopping trip and therefore there was no need to pick up a disposable plastic carrier or to pay for yet another reusable bag at the checkout point.

No system is perfect, and reusable bags do have an impact on the environment, but it is significantly less than that of disposable bags. Our bags have the potential to replace thousands of plastic bags in its lifetime. The only way this is possible is to construct it from durable, high quality material such as ripstop polyester.  FootprintBags are made very well and are long-lasting and are therefore a one-off purchase.

It is our strong belief that with a convenient multipack more people will decide to use reusable shopping bags. The end result is a huge net positive impact on the environment.

Footprint Bag - Press Release 02-09-2008

February 1st, 2009

New ‘bag within a bag’ set to revolutionise green shopping habits
A new shopping bag has been launched that is set to revolutionise people’s shopping habits while helping the environment.
The ‘FootprintBag’ is a compact, hard-wearing yet stylish alternative to the many reusable shopping bags available on the market today.
Designed by two Huddersfield ‘mumtrepreneurs’, Claire Peto Cook and Hanny Wadsworth, The  FootprintBag contains eight reusable bags made from  rip stop nylon (used for parachutes)within one compact pack. The pack is small enough to fit into a handbag and is designed to be hung on a supermarket trolley.  There’s even a trolley coin attached to make life easy!
Claire, 39, and a mum-of-two says: “The idea for the FootprintBag came about one afternoon last summer when we were chatting about the town of Hebden Bridge becoming plastic bag-free. We were mulling over the trials of food shopping with bulky, reusable bags in all different shapes and sizes and how inconvenient it all was. We came up with this idea and after a few trial and error designs, The FootprintBag was born.”

Claire and Hanny have since found a manufacturer and supplier for the bag and with supermarket chains including Asda and Marks and Spencer already expressing an interest in the product, The FootprintBag looks set to become a familiar sight in supermarkets and shops across the UK.
The two mothers have sought support and backing from former Dragon’s Den star and founder of Red Letter Days, Rachel Elnaugh to help them get the product into the shops. She describes the bag as ‘A fantastic, well thought through design; the whole concept is very much ‘of the moment’, addressing the real and highlighted consumer need to find an alternative to the wastage and environmental damage caused by disposable carrier bags.’
Claire and Hanny formed the business last November and have worked through pregnancy and two births!  Claire is currently on maternity leave from British Airways, where she works as cabin crew, along with partner Jon Eastwell. She has two children, Archie, four, and Violet. Hanny, originally from Germany, is married to former Huddersfield Town player Ian Wadsworth. She has a four year old son, Ben, and has just given birth to her second boy, Sam.
Speaking about their hopes for The FootprintBag Hanny says: “I believe people are prepared to do their part for the environment now; they don’t want to see shocking pictures of dying turtles and trees full of dissolving plastic bags. The Footprint Bag shopping bag pack is a one-off purchase that helps provide a solution to the environmental damage that plastic carrier bags cause. I believe that one day every single household in the UK will have a FootprintBag multi-pack to take on every single shopping trip.”
The FootprintBag is currently available with eight shopping-bags and can be bought online at www.footprintbag.com . Two more packs which each contain four and six bags are due to be launched within the next few months.
