Footprint Bag - Reusable Shopping Bags with a difference

PRESS RELEASE - FootprintBag Ltd., 28.10.2011

ffarwelio â bagiau plastig am byth!

Good bye to plastic bags forever!

Sainsbury’s have removed their bags from the packing areas at the checkouts, M&S are charging for their bags and now the Welsh government has taken the bull by the horns and implemented an across the board 5p charge on all single use carrier bags. All in an effort to encourage us to supply our own bags and cut the number that end up in landfill.

FootprintBag has the answer … Shoppers (even those with the best intentions) are still struggling with the basic bit - remembering to actually take the bags out with them! (Depressingly, between May 2009- May 2010, carrier bag usage even increased in the UK)

Two mums, Hanny Wadsworth and Claire Eastwell, think they have found the solution – a practical and convenient alternative to plastic bags – the FootprintBag Pack. An extremely clever ‘bag within a bag’ system, it has multiple reusable and stylish bags made from super tough parachute material within one compact pack.

The bags last indefinitely and the pack easily fits in a glove compartment or handbag. There’s even a handy trolley coin attached too. Everything ready to go in one place. The pack is designed to hang on a trolley, drop down and each pouch holds a readily available fold up bag. Simple!

The FootprintBag pack has created a buzz in their local town and beyond. ASDA sell them in selected stores and a loyal band of followers from internet sales as far removed as Perthshire to Sydney!

The women put its growing success down to the fact that they recognized the need for something to replace plastic bags that people would actually use and designed a pack that they, as shoppers, needed. “The testimony to the success of our multi packs, is that we use and love them,” explains Claire Eastwell, “I have five young children and honestly can’t imagine not shopping with my FootprintBag 8-pack!” “I used to grab a carrier bag at the checkout, now I just grab however many of my reusable bags I need. It works because it’s simple – no changes in shopping habits are really needed.” agrees Hanny Wadsworth.

From 8-packs for family shoppers to the latest 2-pack edition to the range, there is a FootprintBag pack to suit everybody. Let the revolution begin and with any luck, single use carriers can become a dim and distant memory.

Ban on plastic bags fails

August 6th, 2011

The growing problem of plastic bag usage is still very much in the news, as recently mentioned in the Daily Mail which stated over 300 millions bags were issued last year.  Our local newspaper, The Huddersfield Examiner, highlighted the attempt by Kirklees Council to ban plastic bag usage over a period of time.

Footprint Bag realised the problem why many reusable bags were not being adopted was down to practicality, compactness, style, convenience and durability. Obviously, cost is a factor in the current economic time, so Footprint Bag products are designed to address these issues and eradicate the use of plastic bags, at an affordable cost to the customer. Taking this approach means we can all work to make the world a better place.

Footprint Bag launches “Supermarket” version

September 20th, 2010

September 2010

In our effort to bring Footprint Bag to the nation, we are pleased to say that there is now an ASDA ‘supermarket’ version of our 6-pack shopping bag pack. This is currently only available to all you lucky Yorkshire ASDA shoppers but watch this space …

We are so pleased that the nice people at ASDA love our product and recognize the difference it can make. In view of the disappointing supermarket results as reported in the Daily Mail recently (plastic bag reduction targets have been missed by supermarkets for the second year running) it is ever more important to convert shoppers to the benefits of the Footprint Bag.

For all you sitting on the fence out there (!) these include:

1.No need to change your shopping habits – you reach for a plastic bag, so reach for a Footprint Bag hanging from your trolley instead! (a favourite of my co-founder, Hanny)

2. A size for everyone and all the packs fit in a glove compartment or most handbags – so never forgotten!

3. They are strong and last indefinitely.

4. You are doing your bit for the environment.

5. Last but not least, they look rather good in your trolley!

Have a look at the Daily Mail article “50 million plastic bag rise” to see why Footprint Bag were keen to address this problem.

It’s in the Bag!

FASHION

It’s in the bag
Bradford Telegraph and Argus

By Sally Clifford »

When a West Yorkshire milltown launched a carrier bag boycott, it gave mums Hanny Wadsworth and Claire Eastwell an enterprising idea.
Being busy mums, the women were used to multi-tasking, so launching their environmentally-friendly shopping bag with a difference fitted in with the throng of their busy lives.
“Needs must and our office often resembles a nursery with discarded dolls and pieces of puzzles more than a business empire – but our motto, ‘keep calm and carry on’ hangs proudly on the wall to remind us that we wouldn’t want it any other way,” they say.
FootprintBags are packs of multiple shopping bags – the packs of eight are geared towards supermarket family shopping and the four-pack is a compact and stylish pack of four re-usable shopping bags. They are great for mums on the go who need to pick up some bits and pieces along the way. Both styles of bag can easily hook onto a pushchair or trolley and there is also a trolley coin attached.
Hanny and Claire have thought of everything and although they have had their products professionally tried and tested they use them extensively themselves with other mums in mind.
“We wanted something you can take shopping, a re-usable bag because we are both eco-minded but we wanted something we wouldn’t leave at home, something you could pop in your handbag so you’ve got everything in one compact pouch, something practical and convenient and a bit stylish,” says Hanny, who uses the eight-pack for her family shop. “I’ve been using mine for three years and it’s going really well.”
The bags are made from a non-woven biodegradable fabric incorporating parachute material making them strong and sturdy. “I’ve weighed mine down with lots of tins and they are independently tested as well but the proof is in the pudding – we use them ourselves,” says Claire.
Their idea to create a funky and eco-friendly bag followed a discussion the two friends had about the environmentally-conscious community of Hebden Bridge going plastic-bag-free.
“We talked about re-usable bags and what we were using,” says Claire.
Adds Hanny: “We were talking about how many you have to have in your car boot to cope with the weekly family shop.”
The pair, who met while taking their sons swimming, came to live in Holmfirth from other areas. Their eco-conscious attitude constituted the decision to launch their own enterprise and combine their talents.
Hanny, who worked in TV and radio production for a large advertising company, used her art background to design the product and the website.
Air stewardess Claire, who trained as a journalist and worked as a primary teacher, writes the promotional material. “It works well with Hanny because she is good at design and I write the copy for the website. We complement each other,” she says.
The women initially retailed through their Footprintbag website but have since secured a contract with Lakeland, the kitchen store, and they are also hoping to get their products on to supermarket shelves. They are also busy developing their range and are currently working on a nappy bag.
“I think people really want to do something. People are eco-minded and it’s just having something that is convenient and you don’t forget to take with you. I think people don’t want to take a carrier bag but they forget to take a bag,” says Claire.
“A lot of people want to do their bit for the environment but they add to their collection of re-usable bags which they keep at home.”
“But this isn’t just a UK problem, it’s a worldwide problem is the bag situation,” adds Hanny.
Hanny moved to Holmfirth from her native Germany. Her husband, former professional footballer Ian Wadsworth, is from Huddersfield. They met while he was playing in Germany.
“People from Spain tell us we should go over there. We’ve had a woman from Australia asking if we can get in touch with their companies. Our supporters are very supportive,” she says.
“We get lots of e-mails from people saying they love the product. It’s nice when people bother to e-mail you.”
And, like the product they are busy promoting, the pair are still going strong. “It would probably be hard to say they last a lifetime but we’d say they can,” says Hanny.

Mum’s the Boss - Footprint Bag Review

May 4th, 2010

Product Review: Footprint Bags

Posted By MUM’S THE BOSS on 4th MAY 2010

Footprint Bag 4 Bag multipack“Footprint Bags are an ingenious product range created by two environmentally-aware young mums, Hanny and Claire. When Hepden Bridge in Yorkshire, near where they lived, decided to become a plastic bag free town this sparked an idea, and 3 years later a fabulous and practical product – the reusable shopping bag pack. I still get excited at the anticipation that comes with expecting a parcel – especially a product for review. However, this time when the postman knocked with my parcel – a sleek and shiny black jiffy envelope – even my husband was intrigued. Inside the lovely packaging continued – wrapped in black tissue was my new 4 bag footprint bag pack. Smaller than I had anticipated, the pouch is secured with Velcro and contains 4 reusable bags – and the really clever part – a trolley coin attached to the handle so when you are shopping it hangs discreetly off the back of the trolley.

The reason for getting the smaller of the 2 was I was thinking about ‘going in to town’ trip, or to keep in the glove box of the car so when I stop to pick up some essentials on the way home I always have bags. Normally dreading the supermarket I had a lighter than usual step as I set out to road test the bags. Firstly – massively less bulky to carry than the hessian/cotton/plastic bag for life ensemble I usually cart in with me – and just hang neatly off trolley or sit discreetly in corner.

Then came the real test – would they hold enough? In fact they are a great size – larger than a carrier bag – but not so large you can’t then lift them up! The shape is great and very flexible, and the handles are wide and strong. Even the checkout commented on what a great idea and how neat they were. Carrying the bags from the car up the garden path revealed another advantage –the material the bags are made of means that the handles don’t cut into your flesh – even when heavily laden – result! One of the best and most practical products I have used this year – real thumbs up. I just need an 8 pack one now for the weekly shop – 4 just aren’t enough.”
